Problem extending lvol7 in VG00

When I tried to extend the lvol7, I get the following error:

lvextend -L 4000 /dev/vg00/lvol7
lvextend: Warning: couldn't query physical volume "/dev/dsk/c3t6d0":
The specified path does not correspond to physical volume attached to
this volume group
lvextend: Warning: couldn't query all of the physical volumes.
lvextend: Not enough free physical extents available.
Logical volume "/dev/vg00/lvol7" could not be extended.
Failure possibly caused by strict allocation policy

When I run vgdisplay -v vg00:

Re: Problem extending lvol7 in VG00

Hi,

looks like the disk /dev/dsk/c3t6d0 has failed. Fix this first.

Refer to
http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-1236/When_Good_Disks_Go_Bad.pdf
on how to proceed.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Problem extending lvol7 in VG00

Well - it looks like you have lost /dev/dsk/c3t6d0

Try

diskinfo /dev/rdsk/c3t6d0

Come back?

How about ioscan -fnC disk

Get any NO_HW ?

Re: Problem extending lvol7 in VG00

Feljav,

It looks like you may have a failed disk. Use ioscan to see if you can still see /dev/dsk/c0t6d0.

If it is showing as NO HARDWARE then you will need to place a hardware call.

Re: Problem extending lvol7 in VG00

Whe I run a ioscan -fnC disk I get HW path and the status is claimed.

Re: Problem extending lvol7 in VG00

Any other help!!!

I run
dd if=/dev/rdsk/c3t6d0 of=/dev/null bs=1024k count=64 and everything is ok.

I run ioscan and diskinfo and everything is ok. Any help!!

Re: Problem extending lvol7 in VG00

Just because an ioscan shows the disk as CLAIMED it doesn't mean it is good. Sometimes the electronics and disk controller are working but the disk itself has stopped spinning. A diskinfo -v command or check the /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log file for any EMS errors or LVM errors.

As for your lvextend command the reason you can't extend is because you have a strict allocation policy set and have additonal lvols on the disk after lvol7. Top get around this you will have to remove the extra lvols or I think a lvchange -s n /dev/vg00/lvol7 might fix the problem but I've never used this method before as I always try to keep all my lvols in vg00 contiguous.

Re: Problem extending lvol7 in VG00

If the status is CLAIMED and dd works, try to
vgchange -a y vg00
vgsync vg00
and check the status again.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Problem extending lvol7 in VG00

try

# lvextend -L 4000M /dev/vg00/lvol7

Also you might want to look to see if you have any lvols with data on /dev/dsk/c3t6d0. You can use lvdisplay to see that info. If you do not have any extents used on that drive for any of the lvols you can remove it from the volume group. Then you can look into the issue you have with that disk. I hope you have a backup of the data in vg00.
