saconfig - added 3 new disks; how to assign them?

HI

Have just put 3 new 300GB disks in an MSA30, they are now in UNASSIGNED state.

How do I asign them?

Re: saconfig - added 3 new disks; how to assign them?

You dont mention the SA controller model or the system, but...for the most part you use the saconfig command to configure the drives into a LUN.   The command to create a LUN would be something like  saconfig /dev/cissXX -R <raid-level> -S <stripe-size>.....etc.

Reference either the man page or see the link to a document that explains the command usage well:

Re: saconfig - added 3 new disks; how to assign them?

Thanks Bob

I attach an sautil output:

Also, what I managed to find out was the command which you also identified, so I did:

saconfig /dev/ciss0 -R 5 -S 16 -p 1:4 -p 1:5 -p 2:2

ALl the drives were now NOT unassigned, but OK.  BUT, upon doing an saconfig /dev/ciss0, i got a Logical Drive #9, using only the 3 new disks:

---------- LOGICAL DRIVE 9 ----------

Device File     = c0t1d1
RAID Level      = 5
Size            = 572195 MB
Stripe Size     = 16 KB
Status          = OK

Participating Physical Drive(s):

Ch   ID

1    4
1    5
2    2

Participating Spare Drive(s):

None

My actual aim is to attach these 3 new disks into the EXISTING RAID group, using the same spare, this allowing me to create logical drives spanning ALL the disks.  Hope I've made it clear, apologies if it's not.

Best Regards

Re: saconfig - added 3 new disks; how to assign them?

Look for the -E option in the saconfig command.   Assuming the controller supports it you can expand an existing array by adding the disks to that array.  You specify the physical disk so you need to remove that LUN you just created to free up those disks.

saconfig /dev/cissX -E <lunid> -p physicaldisk -p physicaldisk ...

(reference page 52 of the document linked above for more info)

Re: saconfig - added 3 new disks; how to assign them?

Thanks Bob.

OK, I can free up those disks no problem. If I do as you suggest, do I specify all my 10 or 11 disks in the command, ie -p 1:1 -p 1:2 -p 1:3 -p 1:4 etc until I use all the drives in the RAID?

Basically, I need to create 3 NEW LV's of 200GB, 150GB & 30GB.  Before I put these disks in, we had no capacity. (I'm not extending any existing LV's)

Will my commands therefore be:

saconfig /dev/ciss0 -E 9 -c 200 -R 5 -s 16 -p 1:0 -p 1:1 -p 1:2 -p 1:3 -p 1:4 -p 1:5 -p 2:2 -p 2:3 -p 2:4 -p 2:5

saconfig /dev/ciss0 -E 10 -c 150 -R 5 -s 16 -p 1:0 -p 1:1 -p 1:2 -p 1:3 -p 1:4 -p 1:5 -p 2:2 -p 2:3 -p 2:4 -p 2:5

saconfig /dev/ciss0 -E 11 -c 30 -R 5 -s 16 -p 1:0 -p 1:1 -p 1:2 -p 1:3 -p 1:4 -p 1:5 -p 2:2 -p 2:3 -p 2:4 -p 2:5

Am I making sense?

Re: saconfig - added 3 new disks; how to assign them?

Bearing in mind there is data on the current disks before adding the new 3.

Re: saconfig - added 3 new disks; how to assign them?

OK, so  guess I am not so sure then....

You want to create three new LUN's, but you want the new LUN's to span all of the disks?

If you have no spare capacity on the existing disks, you wont be able to do this.  The new LUN's will only be able to span the new disks.

Therefore, forget the -E option and just build new LUN's specifying the space you need for each and specifying the new disks.

Am I making sense now? :-)

Re: saconfig - added 3 new disks; how to assign them?

You first need to expand your existing logical drives to the new disks, then create the new drives on all of them, see also your new thread http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/LVM-and-VxVM/Can-I-add-3-new-disks-to-an-existing-Raid-Set-on-MSA30-HP-UX/m-p/5420179#M49977

Hope this helps!
