vgdisplay: Warning: couldn't query physical volume
Hi Gurus ,
Greetings !!

vgdisplay: Warning: couldn't query physical volume "/dev/dsk/c39t0d7"
However , if i do a :
# ioscan -m dsf /dev/dsk/c39t0d7
Persistent DSF Legacy DSF(s)
========================================
/dev/disk/disk39 /dev/dsk/c39t0d7
# ioscan -m dsf /dev/disk/disk39

/dev/disk/disk39 /dev/dsk/c20t0d7
/dev/dsk/c26t0d7
/dev/dsk/c37t0d7
/dev/dsk/c39t0d7
You have mail in /var/mail/root
# scsimgr -p lun_map -D /dev/rdisk/disk39

All the 15 paths are 'claimed' in ioscan o/p and i have reboot and rebuilt the lvmtab also , error persists.
will a vgcfgrestore only on that particular path work ....i am sure there are many more idea , please suggest .
the env is hp ux v 3 on rx2800 and storage is p6300.some months back , the fc card was removed and reinstered at the same path , after which his error started

Re: vgdisplay: Warning: couldn't query physical volume
Why an odd number - should be 16 paths, right?
For any reason 1 path has a problem - bad cable, sfp or zoning?
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: vgdisplay: Warning: couldn't query physical volume
This really looks like a path has problems.
I would check the switch (switchshow) if you see all the HBAs.
Also check the EVA if all host ports are connected and if all LUNs are presented to all server HBAs.
Could you post a "vgdisplay -v" instead of "vgdisplay" only?
I like to know if you configured the legacy or agile devices.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: vgdisplay: Warning: couldn't query physical volume
switchshow seems ok and error on ports , if there was a error on switch port , the new vg created with newly presented disk from same storage over the same san swicth does not have this problem :

Re: vgdisplay: Warning: couldn't query physical volume
You configured c37t1d1 but the warning is about c37t0d1 (same for other devices).
What tells
# strings /etc/lvmtab
since you have lvm 1.0 VGs only?
And please post a "vgdisplay -v"!
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: vgdisplay: Warning: couldn't query physical volume
Not exactly sure what is wrong here, but first I would convert the vg06 to use agile devices (man vgdsf).
Most of the times it gives trouble when deleting (but not properly removing) a volume group.
You currently have vg00, vg06 abd vg02.
What is listed in
# ll /etc/lvmconf
if there are other VG entries, try this:
(example):
# vgcfgrestore -l -v -n vg01
this will list the stored information.
Maybe the disks where used in another vg before and the configuration information still exists?
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: vgdisplay: Warning: couldn't query physical volume
Hi Torsten ,
The device file must have been there for one ofprevious vg that has since been removed and doesn't exist anymore.
However , they are being recreated by vgscan in lvmtab this time for another volume group , and therefore the said error.
the lvmconf does not mention those disks:
# vgcfgrestore -l -v -n vg06
Volume Group Configuration information in "/etc/lvmconf/vg06.conf"
VG Name /dev/vg06
