Btw, maybe a bit off topic here,
have you played with Jabber and Perl yet?
After all what I've read about Jabber and the Net::Jabber module this sounds to me like a perfect tool for site wide systems monitoring and alertin, massaging, whatever.
Do you know of code samples where someone have written wee Jabber clients in Perl for various monitoring tasks?
Would be eager to see...

Ahh, OK. What a very clear explanation.
Still can't help you, since I don't have HP C++.

My strategy, placed in your shoes, would be to (temporarily) install gcc-built perl, and use that to generate the MySQL interface for perl, install that on the GNU perl and test the connection to MySQL.
If it works, copy the installed files to the HP cc perl and test if it still works. Chances are far beyond zero that it will.
If it works, remove the GNU perl, and connect to both databases from the same script.
