Mobile Performance Testing and the ‘Mobile Surge’

‎01-08-2012 03:00 AM - edited ‎09-22-2015 01:22 PM

A few weeks ago, I had lunch with a performance engineering leader for a large European retail distributor. We talked about their experience with mobile applications, and I learned a few things that I thought were interesting.

One confirmed my beliefs, and one was an eye opener.

First, he confirmed my belief about the power of mobile apps, when he shared a story about how in one region, they saw revenue from stores (their customers) suddenly drop off.   What happened?   Well, it turns out that a competitor had introduced a tablet application to make stock checking and re-ordering easier for the stores.... And it was costing them in sales.  I expect this will be one of many stories about how mobile applications disrupt the market.

So, they responded with their own mobile solution (of course they did).  But then he told me about a surprise surge in usage of their application that can have implications on performance....  After they deployed their application, and users installed it, all was more or less according to plan... But, when they released an update to the application, a short while later, they had a substantial surge in traffic and usage...  Why?   It seems that everyone was notified of the new version in the app store, and downloaded the update, and now wanted to check out what was new!  I could see myself doing exactly what he was describing...  Application gets updated, and all of a sudden, I launch the app and explore what's new....  Me and thousands of other people just like me all wanting to see what new features were in the app.!

Is that common for anyone else?

As you test and deploy your mobile applications, there are new scenarios that you need to account for.  But, the ultimately, you must be prepared for mobile apps and the impact they will have on your systems.
