In the words of Paul Bear Bryant, the legendary head coach of the University of Alabama football team, “It’s not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.”  Follow these words and prepare to win and pass your certification exams.

To win, you need to put in the time and effort it will take to achieve a pass on an exam. How do you prepare for success?

Study, Prepare & Practice

Take the exam seriously and give yourself enough time to study, prepare, and practice before a testing deadline. Don’t try to cram the night before or the few days before you schedule an exam.

Research what the exam will test and who should take the exam.  Read the EPG (exam prep guide) for the exam you want to take and honestly assess if the description matches your level of knowledge, skill, and background.  If you lack the outlined requirements develop a plan to fill the gap.

Additional Resources

Are there additional resources or references listed in the EPG?  If there are, take the time to go through them in a focused and intentional way assessing where the gaps in your knowledge and experience are. Make and execute a plan to erase the gap. Include available HP Press books in your gap plan.

Is there training available? Consider taking available training. During ILTs (instructor-led trainings), there are multiple benefits to being in a classroom with other professionals.  As the class works through competency-based learning activities and labs, collaboration and discussions occur, the content of which are not in the learning materials. During hands-on activities and labs you learn by doing. The shared expertise of your classmates and instructor takes your learning to new levels.  You network with your classmates as well.

Do not take the HP ExpertOne exams lightly. You sincerely have to work at it. Even though the information required to pass will be in the training, additional resources will help tremendously. I never regret any of the time I spent studying and always regret "not studying." I know the article is great advice because I have so many HP Certifications and I would not have a single one if I did not put in the time and effort to get ready. I also know that the most competent "Subject Matter Experts" along with taking the training course, also study, study, study, prior to taking an HP ExpertOne exam.
