CIFS 1.2 on VMS Platform - slow connectivity with windows 7 PC

Hi,
I have intsalled CIFS 1.2 on a DS20E running VMS 8.3.

I have a windows XP PC connecting to shares on the Alpha - all ok

When I try the corresponing thing with the windows 7 box it does connect but is very very slow and unstable.
Any clues?

Re: CIFS 1.2 on VMS Platform - slow connectivity with windows 7 PC

The CIFS teams seems to have invented its own scheme for distributing and installing patches. If you go to the download page here:

http://h71000.www7.hp.com/network/cifs_download.html

and scroll down far enough, you see a link to patch downloads at:

ftp://pathwork:Support9@ftp.usa.hp.com/

Look in the cifs-v12 directory for the release notes file CIFSV12-PS002_RELEASE_NOTES.TXT, which has a list of fixes and instructions for the non-conventional installation of patches. The release notes also include a registry hack to make a Windows 7 client work with a CIFS primary domain controller. May not be applicable to your situation if you have something else as the PDC.

Also see Jim Duff's article entitled "Polling Samba" at

http://www.eight-cubed.com/blog/archives/001178.html#001178

which describes one kind of performance problem with CIFS (which may or may not be applicable to your situation).

Re: CIFS 1.2 on VMS Platform - slow connectivity with windows 7 PC

Given Windows XP works and the Windows 7 connection is "very very slow and unstable", this implies some sort of hardware or network issue, or a problem within the Windows 7 environment, and not the usual triggers for connectivity.

That written, here's my usual list of Windows tweaks and Windows security settings downgrades that are needed for use with Samba (such as HP CIFS) servers:

http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1590

But I'd not expect a missing tweak to cause "very very slow and unstable" behavior on just one box. Definitely confirm that your network is stable. Swap the Windows 7 and Windows XP boxes, and see if there's an error with the connection or cabling or switch-port being used by the Windows 7 box; if the problem stays with the connection, or moves with the client. Or alternatively, try a different Windows 7 box from a completely different path than the current problematic Windows 7 box.

There are no Windows boxes available here, so I can't particularly help further with this.

Re: CIFS 1.2 on VMS Platform - slow connectivity with windows 7 PC

discovered this to be caused by the network card on the PC (device manager - network adapters - advandced tab) speed/duplex wasnt set to AUTO - set to AUTO - all ok
