Re: Concern abt package IP at DR end...

This is what DNS (Domain name server) is usually for. If your 50 locations are using their hosts files instead of a dns lookup for this package, yes, you have to update all 50 of them withe the new IP address and when your DR exercise is complete and you relocate the package back to its original IP address, you need to revert all 50 locations to the old address back. Use DNS if at all possible.

Re: Concern abt package IP at DR end...

Shalom,

It would be helpful if you did not use Internet shortcuts in your post d means the right?

Anyway, a DR test can be done a few ways.

1) You maintain the DR sight as part of the cluster and have packages fail over automatically. This requires Metro or Continental Cluster.

2) You maintain a ready to go cluster in DR and just copy the data over as often as practical.

If you want instant DR with very little downtime, you need to go option 1. Otherwise you can probably use the same IP address combination or a different network and just change one number in the configuration files.

Most DR plans its acceptable to be down the time it takes to restore a tape backup and then bring up the DR cluster.

Re: Concern abt package IP at DR end...

Hi Mel,
The DNS is to be configured at our Gateway rite ???

i mean at the router level ???
such that we would be entering a name say "xyz" at all of those 50 locations....and they would be accessing my Package IP at primary site via this DNS..

similarly wen we shift to DR we will only change the pointer link which would nw be pointing towards DR IP ( where service-guard is not present )

Re: Concern abt package IP at DR end...

DNS should be configured for all your servers which need access to the serviceguard package.

Please post the contents of the /etc/nsswitch.conf and /etc/resolv.conf files from one of these 50 servers and we can tell if they are configured for DNS or not.

Re: Concern abt package IP at DR end...

Hi Mel,
Actually they are all 50 windows servers...
they have a file wherein we put the package IP...

My setup is like...
2 HPux servers ..rx6600 in cluster..
And then at remote client end i.e. at 50 locations we have this win2000/2003 servers...

Re: Concern abt package IP at DR end...

Then you have no other solution than updating the IP on all of those 50 windows machines, wherever you are putting them in. Windows can use DNS as you know but I am not sure how your package's interaction with these machines happen. So it is very hard to say. But if you are updating the hosts file on the windows machines, you may then well use the DNS service but it is more like the windows administrators to do this change from using the hosts file to using the DNS service.
