SMTP mail stopped working.

On an Alpha DS10:

HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Alpha Version V5.4

on a AlphaServer DS10 466 MHz running OpenVMS V7.3-2

The system has been running without any issues for:      Uptime 516 06:33:09

A few days ago a standard repeating batch-job to send a status via Email just stopped working with the following status for the MAIL function:    %SYSTEM-F-NOLOGNAM, no logical name match

The line that generates this is:  MAIL/SUBJ="CURRENT STATUS"   X.TMP   SMTP%PERSON@SITE.COM

This has worked without fail and continues to work wiithout fail on other systems.

A reset of the SMTP service has no effect.  No other indications of problems in any logfile exist even with level 5 logging enabled.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dan

Re: SMTP mail stopped working.

Some change in host name mapping? dns?

Anyway, I would go straight for the big hammer:

ANALYZE/SYSTEM

SDA> LNM LOAD

SDA> LNM START TRACE

:

MAIL ....   ! In parallel process. Be sure to have PID handy

:

SDA> LNM STOP TRACE

SDA> LNM SHOW TRACE /ID=<pid for process doing mail>  ! To terminal

SDA> SET OUT LNM.TMP ! If show looked useful

SDA> LNM SHOW TRACE /ID=<pid for process doing mail>   ! Repeat to file

... study...

Re: SMTP mail stopped working.

With the assistance of the traces as you suggested on a system that worked as well as the one that didn't I found that the following logical names were "missing". Why? I don't know, but restoring them "fixed" the problem.

Thanks,
Dan

Logical names missing:
TCPIP$INET_HOST
TCPIP$INET_DOMAIN
