Re: TCP/IP Internet interface error - temporary error - hosts

Jan

It seems that not all systems are affected, for example, 24x7 was unable to reproduce the problem, see earlier posting.

So until Stefan confirmed that he had reproduced the problem, I thought that it was an issue with my system.

So I haven't attempted to escalate this.

Re: TCP/IP Internet interface error - temporary error - hosts

So,

now it would be interesting to find out what is the same for you and Stefan, yet different for 24X7.
Might be non-trivial, but nevertheless, there obviously _DO_ exist (combinations of) circumstances that make this ECO non-generic.
And I do think, that ECOs should work for all configs that MIGHT be found "in the wild", or at least have their domain of valid configs explicitly stated.

After all, this _IS_ VMS, and such trustworthyness _IS_ what VMS stands for!

Proost.

Have one on me.

Re: TCP/IP Internet interface error - temporary error - hosts

This is a regression in the bind resolver code. The problem could be avoided if one used the $IPC_SHR.EXE image from ECO5. Of course that is an unsupported thing to do.

Escalate for the fix. I don't know how to directly advertise fixes...

Re: TCP/IP Internet interface error - temporary error - hosts

I extracted the image named above from ECO5, and installed it. Unfortunately, the problem persists.

$ install/replace

Re: TCP/IP Internet interface error - temporary error - hosts

Actually I did install remove, copy the old image in to place then install add and then I stopped and restarted TCP/IP.

Re: TCP/IP Internet interface error - temporary error - hosts

Also, as I mentioned above, BIND is disabled on my system.

Re: TCP/IP Internet interface error - temporary error - hosts

I know this work around works, I have
done it many times. You are going to have to
take my points away if I am wrong here :).

Did you check with SDA that whatever
image is giving you grief (like TCPIP$FTP_CLIENT)
is picking up the older version of BOTH
TCPIP$IPC_SHR.EXE and UCX$IPC_SHARE.EXE?

(I wish I knew why both shareable images
are always present, one of life's mysteries).

Anyway - escalate for the real fix.

Re: TCP/IP Internet interface error - temporary error - hosts

Whoops. Many apologies Stephen, I thought that was TCPIP *or* UCX not *and*. I had no idea that there was a TCPIP and a UCX image.

Anyway, now I've done what you suggested (properly), host lookup works! Hooray! Thank you.

(Slight error in your most recent posting above you typed SHARE in the UCX image name and it should be shr).

As an aside, another one of life's mysteries is 'why is this site so slow and unreliable?'. If this were a shopping site,
it would go out of business.
