The benefits of deploying BYOD

Dragana BearaChances are good you’ve heard a lot about the business implications of Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD as it’s often referred to. And chances are good that you’re already dealing with BYOD in some form in your workplace. So how does that affect your business? What are the benefits, and what are the potential roadblocks?

Employee engagement and productivity are the real drivers of BYOD’s business value. When you enable your people to choose their own tools to be productive for a particular task, you not only increase their satisfaction, but it also has the added benefit of elevating their effectiveness. And who doesn’t want a more satisfied and effective workforce?

By implementing a comprehensive BYOD and mobility strategy, you can often deliver gains in productivity from your staff that previously weren’t available.

BYOD itself is not a technology; it’s a behavior. It’s a way of thinking, fostered by trends and expectations in the outside world. That’s important to remember when trying to get the most from your mobility solution. The challenge that many organizations currently face is calibrating their response to this behavior and the technology solutions that are required. Too limited an approach can result in an incomplete and stifling experience for workers. Too lax and you run the risk of creating a chaotic jumble of competing and incompatible devices and approaches. Your job, is to help make sure you find an approach that is ‘just right.’

The ultimate aims of BYOD, driving productivity and engagement, can only be fully realized when the behavior is embraced and your infrastructure has been transformed to accommodate it.

If we think of mobility itself as providing universal access to people, applications and data, you can see where many organizations come up short of their staffs’ expectations. For instance, wired and wireless networks are usually segregated, without support for user self-service. The corporate edge tends to be solid and difficult to traverse. Also, services are generally firewalled behind barriers instead of being securely presented over the Internet, whether through Wi-Fi or cellular.

By contrast, the unmistakable shift toward the consumerization of IT puts universal access and great user experience at the center of user productivity, which means these roadblocks need to be overcome. But how?

Integrating your network with the technologies and services that deliver productivity is key for universal access. HP Networking, with innovative products and services like role-based access control, or RBAC, can help transform your environment from focusing on delivering the network to delivering connectivity.
