install firefox2006

I try to tar -xf firefox2006.tar and got errors:

memory allcation failed for extended data while reading: Not enough space.

I check the space and looks good.

any suggestions

appreciate.

Which "space" did you check? The error
message refers to memory, not disk space.

Some context might be useful, like, for
example:

Where did you get this "firefox2006.tar"?

On what are you running this "tar" command?

Re: install firefox2006

As Steven says, this is (or might be) a virtual memory problem (limit) in the environment of the user running the tar command. See ulimit -a.

Also, what version of Tru64 are we dealing with here ? V5 or older ? See uname -a or sizer -v.

Or, The tar archive itself might be corrupt - is the archive readable by tar on another Un*x platform ?

Re: install firefox2006

thanks. I couldn't run sizer -v and I think because I am using ver.4. I tried swapon -s and it showed I have 786mb memory and hardly used. I got firefox tar from hp web site. and I just noticed it require tru64 v5. also there is old ver. of firefox, which one can I load under ver.4?

thanks in advance

Thanks for the URL.

Amazing. "Version 5.1B or later", actually.
How old is V5.0?

I'd be amazed if there were. For Tru64 V4.x,
you need to do your shopping for software in
antique stores. You may be able to find some
version of Mozilla (or Netscape, or Mosaic,
or something) for an OS that old, but you
should adjust your expectations downward.
