9.1GB MO disk, "write CAL error" (4, 40, 9D), please help

Hi, we have a couple of HP 220mx jukeboxes, each with 2 C1113M drives in it. And we have two 9.1GB HP MO WORM disks that we can not read. Each read request returns scsi sense (4, 40, 9d). We can get the disk capacity, and the drive can get ready when the disk is put into the drive. If there's any chance that we can do something to read the disk, please help. The disks are from our customer, so, how the problem was created in the first place is not clear at this moment.

Thanks for any suggestions.

in order to read those worm disk, you probably need the original backup application
now not clear what you are using to read those disk, but windows for example do not support them natively as he need to write a sign on a disk before to mount it

oh and I forgot to says about the specific error, write cal error, do you get the same error also with new media? the calibration is an operation that occur on a specific reserved area of the media when it is loaded, in order to check the power need in the laser beam.
If it is long time you didn't use the drives, it could be some dust went on the lense, and cause that failure
<usually the laser lens never got dust on it if the drives are powered, as the airflow created inside prevent that to occurs, but having them powerd off, can create someproblem to the lens.
<<<<<<cleaning it is a bit hard, but if they are out of warranty, you can do it with some patience

Thanks for your reply. We can access the devices through several UNIX systems, and this specific test was done on AIX. We have some utilities to access the device1 SCSI request at a time, so, everything can be done on SCSI command block level. The problem did happen to 1 new 9.1GB blank disk once, but, that was about it. All 2.6GB, 5.2GB, and 9.1GB disks we tested can be accessed fine in those devices of ours. The devices we are using to read the 2 bad 9.1GB disks are not the drives that wrote them in the first place, those drives and disks are from one of our customers. I'll relay your suggestions to our customer and see if they need to have their drives cleaned. Thanks gain.
