Compaq 6710 B burns CDs but not dvds

I have a Compaq 6710 B laptop at first I was having issues burning dvds but recently I have discovered that I can burn CDs only I still can't burn dvds.
A new issue came up with itunes I had received an error message when I opened itunes the error message said I had registry errors due to installing or uninstalling burning software programs.
Can registry errors be causing DVD burning issues?
How can I fix this?

You need to upgrade your drive firmware.
