cd-rw drive speed

My HP9900 cd-rw dvd combo ran so nicely in my Dell R350 under Win 98 that I transferred it to my Dell 4500 under Win XP. It now tends to run at max speed. On audio playback the mechanical hum is awful. Is it the drive, the Dell, XP or the Windows Media Player. Suggestions? Thanks.

Re: cd-rw drive speed

Hi Sander,

It could be that one of the screws securing the drive in its bay has worked loose..

have a look and let me know,

Cheers,

Re: cd-rw drive speed

Gary,

Thanks, I already tried that. I think the drive support is flimsy but I see no need for the drive to run at such a high speed.

Call HP and get it replaced if it's still in Warrenty.
