dvd 640b drive

I have an HP Pavilion a850e with cd rom & dvd/read/write/lightscribe drive. The cd rom will read and play purchased cds & dvds. The dvd rom will not. It will play prior cd's that have ben burned but when purchased media is inserted, the dvd will read for a few seconds and then the computer freezes up and shuts down. The computer is approximately 1 yr old and the probled started about 4 weeks ago. Any suggestions? HP tech help not very helpful.

I'm having the same problem - spoke with abour 6 chat technicians who finally told me to do a system recovery - losing all software I've installed since I purchased the computer a year ago. I dont think so.

I have the same problem with certain brands of CD-R/RWs and DVD-RWs.

If you rather stay with the error then repair or format windows so you dont lose any programs you deserve everything you get. Anyway, make a backup disk then format.

I have this DVD burner, it works fine for me.

If you are under warranty, ask HP to replace it.
And remember HP and other name brands typically package OEM burning software that works only with certain models of drives,
including the model of drive shipped, or only with an HP brand computer. Or you
could try the free CDBurnerXPPro.
