HP DVD writer 300n

I am unsure why I am having this problem. I can convert a .avi file and burn it to a DVD+RW, but afterwards, I cannot erase or format the DVD. I get the message that there is no disk in the drive. To insert a disk and try again.
I have used the HP software as well as Nero with no luck.
Any ideas?
I am using both Sony and Maxell DVD+RW

TDK seems to work best with HP writers.

Try a DVD-RW.

Also be sure you have the latest firmware upgrade.
