hp dvd writer 840i cd reading problems

I purchased this drive about a year ago - first time I've encountered this problem and it seems strange to me - here goes.

The drive will read and write
dvd-r
dvd+r
dvd-rw
dvd+rw
cd-rw
it will not recognize
cd-r
doesn't matter if it's blank or a store purchased game or music cd.
Drivers are updated - just can't figure out why it will read and write cd-rws but not just plain cd-rs. Anyone have an idea,what the problem could be?
Almost forgot - have tried several different brands of disks.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
