Space required between servers?

I was told that HP's warranty requires that there is at least 1U of space in between each server in a rack due to vibration and heat.

Is this true? If so, can you link me to the document that discusses it?

Thanks

Re: Space required between servers?

I have installed serveral rack servers.
I have never read anything like that.

If anyone claim that, ask them for documentation.

There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't slam them toghter, thats what we do, and you can buy pre-installed racks fully packed with servers.

Space between the server will not give better cooling at all.

The cooling is a matter of airflow from front to rear, and thats it.

But always put on the blanking panels, to avoid hot air recyckling from the rear to the front.

If you have multible rows of racks, remember to put them front to front and back to back. So you will get cold isles and hot isles.

ps.
How much space do they have between servers in blade enclosures?
Nothing :)

Re: Space required between servers?

hi,

i don't think this is a requirements,mostly its a best practice.

if you have enough space in the rack its better for the servers have 1U or 2U space between.

Most of the racks are filled to the full configuration ( capacity ), without space between.

In our datacenter, we have this space because we have lot of space, we are using proliants as well.

But in the rack with the integrity servers ( Itanium ) or PA-RISC servers, we have always a space between the servers. Its better for the cooling.

Re: Space required between servers?

Is this an official HP policy that directly affects the warranty though?

Re: Space required between servers?

hi,

in my personal opinion not, but if like to be sure, contact HP directly, they should be able to give you a statement to your question regarding the warranty.

The best practice is to have the space between servers for physical access from backside of the rack, to be able arange cables, connect external devices and so on.
