Fault-LED an PoE-LED

Hey Folks,

we've got the Problem at several HP 5406zl Switches with the J8726A Management-Module, that the Faul-LED under the Power-LED is flashing orange and the PoE-LED is flashing orange.

There are no error logs in the "show logging" and the "show" power-over-ethernet says something like:

Chassis power-over-ethernet:
Total Available Power : 900 W
Total Failover Power : 0 W
Total Redundancy Power : 0 W
Total Used Power : 66 W +/- 6W
Total Remaining Power : 834 W

The Image is: K.15.18.0007

Do you have any ideas, whats wrong with the 54zl Series? Sometimes we've replaced the management module, sometimes the Copper-Module, sometimes with success, sometimes not.

Hi hungryduck,

In our case only the PoE-LED was flashing orange.  The command "show power-over-ethernet brief all" showed one port with a PoE detection status of "Other Fault" which was enough to cause the blinking LED.  Replacing the module with the "faulty" port fixed the issue since resetting the PoE or the switch had no impact.

I've got the exact same problem right now on a 5406zl, but i have not yet set up a case with HP regarding this.

However the module was replaced about a year ago with a similar fault.

Everything looks good, and the logs have no entry like Marcus mentioned with something like:

PD Other Fault indication

Does it make sense, to change the PSU?
One faulty Switch has two PSUs and the other one only one PSU.
My colleague changed the managemend module (J8726A), without any success/changes.

Did you ever get a resolution to this? I have the exact same problems on a 5406zl where i had nothing in the logs and .
The thing is, i litterally had HP replace module A about two weeks ago.

I rebooted the switch and got the below information in the logging on boot up, but nothing out of the ordinary when looking at the power supplies or PoE

Still the same after two replacement modules, now the alarm is blinking again.

Is this software related??? -im running  K.15.12.0015

Very likely or, at best, probably.

Consider that your Switch is running a March, 2014 released Firmware (the K.15.12.0015), after - and sometime concurrently - the K.15.12 branch, HP developed and released following K branches:

  • K.15.13
  • K.15.14 (partly released after K15.13)
  • K.15.15 (partly released concurrently with K15.13 and K.15.14)
  • K.15.16 (released after K15.13)
  • K.15.17 (partly released after K15.16, latest released was K.15.17.0013)
  • K.15.18 (current K.15.18 branch, latest released was K.15.18.0012)
  • K.16.01
  • K.16.02

So considering all relevant K.15 and K.16 released "Release Notes" some PoE issues were found and fixed since 2014: not sure if your one was among those issues yet recongnized and solved but keeping your Switch Firmware updated (up to K.15.18.0012?) would be of help.

Would an IOS upgrade to YA.16.05.0008 whould help?
