ProCurve Switch 5406zl (J8697A) recognize mini GBIC but no link

Trying to connect a ProCurve Switch 5406zl (J8697A) to a J9775A with two J4858C hp procurve gigabit 1000basesx

On the J9775A the port LED blinks and the module shows up in the admin interface. On the 5406zl, it does not blik, but the module shows up in the admin interface, and i receive a "Mini-GBIC was hot-swapped into port C13" with no errors.

On a compatibillity matrix I found on a HP Webpage (cant locate it now) the mini GBIC is compatibel with any firmware on the 5406zl. As this swith is in production, I chose to leave at firmware K.13.09, ROM K.12.12

(As the J9775A is not in production yet, I just firmwareupgraded it anyway)

But when I connect these two switches, I get no link

On the J9775A I tested both mini GBIC by looping them (as this is not in production), and link was established immediately.

Could I do something else... or do I need to firmwareupdate the switch even though the GBIC is listed to work in the switch with any firmware?

That depends upon the type of module installed in the chassis...

You had specified its in port "C13", you might have been using either a 20Port SFP Module or 24Port.

refer this matrix sheet and upgrade the firmwrae if required.

Note:  If you must upgrade the firmware, first upgrade it to K.13.68 and then follow the recommendation.

Exactly. That was the matrice I was referring to.  The module is a 24 port SFP module J8706a and as far as I can figure out, it should work with any firmware.

I have been asking the cable guys to check the cabling - I guess this is where to problem is.

And so it was. Cable guys has been marking up the cabling incorrect.
