VLAN procurve 2848

I had a few questions about vlanning with the HP Pro-curve 2848 switches. first of all do i need a DHCP server if i want to sub-net the vlans or will they communicate fine through the switch itself if they are created on the same switch? also i have replaced all of my Procurve 2650s with the 2848s for the gigabit speeds. I also am new to VLAN so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!
