cant console into HP procurve 2626 tried everything

I picked up this switch from a friend of mine, i have reset the switch to factory conditions but i cant access it all via any terminal emulation, ive tried hyperterminal, teraterm, and putty with no luck. I have never attempted to connect to a switch before so ive been doing things one at a time from trying to change terminal emulation to ansci to changing from 9600 and up but no luck, screen stays black with no response to the enter key. can anyone assist?

Do you have any other devices that you could try consoling into - just to prove that all other parts of your setup are correct?

Also - are you using a "real" serial port or a USB serial port to make the connection?
