what is the yl stands for in HP Procurve switch name?

Hey,

Just wonder what the yl stands for inside name of HP switch name OR what is the main difference between a switch with yl and without?

Thanks,

Re: what is the yl stands for in HP Procurve switch name?

I don't think the series letters stand for anything in particular, but they indicate the series of switch and the compatibility of modules for the chassis-based switches (and the build of the ProCurve software contains the same features).  To my knowledge, the only switches which actually match series letters are 5400/8200 - the rest all seem to have their own slot type.

I don't think I've seen an official FAQ on this - this is just what I've inferred over the years.

I'd guess it refers to something inside the chassis. Some basic fixed hardware component or architecture, for example.

The 2 letter suffix were just part of the model groupings. There may have been a definition released at some point, but I don't ever recall seeing it.

5300xl

3500/6200yl <-- they share the same modules

5400/8200zl <-- they share the same modules

2910al (note the alphabetic increment)

The new switches (eg 2920) don't have a suffix any more.

There were also the 4100gl & 4200vl series, but to my knowledge there were no other switches which could share their modules.
