DL380G6 download drops

Hi All,

I have 2x DL380G6 with WIndows 2012 R2 whit the same problem. When I start a download (i try i lot of different sites) the download drops and fluctuate. When I connect my laptop or another server on the same cable the download is stable. So my conclusion is is the onboard nic.

What I tried:

- Update fimrware NIC

- Update driver NIC

- Update Windows (patches)

- change all the default nic settings like disable tcp offload for example

- Try another switch

The NIC I use is the default onboard: HP NC382i DP. I tried all the ports.

See the screenshot also:

Is there anyone who has a stable network connection with a DL380G6 and Windows 2012 R2 or an idea to fix this?

Are your server up to date with SPP? [2013 or 2014]

Re: DL380G6 download drops

What version is the NIC driver? There were issues with 7.8.6.0 (I think that was the one). Make sure it's not that one... 7.8.50.0 is the latest driver for that NIC (the Broadcom gigabit multifunction models).

Typically I saw issues with Hyper-V machines on the system if it had that buggy driver version, but even a few native apps like Couchbase server would cause sporadic problems. It's like it wasn't fragmenting packets correctly or something weird.

Re: DL380G6 download drops

Hi all,

- I use NIC driver 7.8.52.0

- I have installed SPP HP_Service_Pack_for_Proliant_2013.09.0-0

Today I add another NIC (intel pro) with the same results :(

See screen:

intel-pro.png

I will try the SPP 2014 now.

Re: DL380G6 download drops

Since the server has 4 LAN ports, maybe you can test another NIC (pair)?

But it sounds like bad hardware for any reason ...

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: DL380G6 download drops

Hi Torsten,

I already did. I add an intel nic to the server (see 2 post above)

The problem is that I have 2 the same DL380g6 servers with the same problem. So it must be a combination of hard and software.

Re: DL380G6 download drops

I have a workaround to fix this problem:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

fixed.png

It was a probleem between Windows 2012 R2 and the old firewall (Cisco PIX) we used.

Now I will search for an fix for the firewall to leave the setting on netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

Case closed: Thanks for the feedback guys!

Regards,

Thomas

Re: DL380G6 download drops

Glad you found a solution.  The Cisco Pix is pretty old.  If they're not still providing updates to it, it's probably missing some fixes for things that newer network cards are capable of.  Sounds like maybe some auto tuning for frame sizes is to blame.  The PIX may be reporting things back to the server that make it adjust frame sizes up/down and create those laggy periods.

Hopefully your solution will help anyone else running into a similar problem.
