[HP DL380p G8] Hardware health monitoring (without ILO)

Is there an option in DL380p G8 servers which can throw email alerts in case of any hardware trouble? I don't want to use ILO.

Also, I can see HP System Management home page is installed as well but does not show any information.

Regards,

-W

One of the great advantages of ILO4 is the hardware monitoring . why you don't want to use it?
Works great together with Insight remote support version 7.

Hope this helps!

Pardon my ignorance but I believe it requires a license?

As long as you have warranty or a contract for the system you can use Insight RS for free.

Thanks Torsten for the helpful reply.

This will cover me till the warranty period but is there such option in G8 servers like we had in G5/G6 servers called Event Notifier under HP Management Agents?

You can still use the agents on the OS, don't forget to install the ILO Channel Interface Driver.

Hope this helps!

From what I can tell, the Insight stuff means running an OS agent, and having the whole HP-specific SIM thing set up.

Recent iLO4 versions have AlertMail configurable, but it has fatal flaws -- it doesn't allow one to specify the TCP port to use on the remote server or SSL/TLS, and it doesn't talk proper SMTP.  I filed a case with HP and they didn't understand or care about the bugs -- basically told me to use the whole Insight morass and closed the ticket.

At the same time I filed a case about the syslog server not working when specified as an FQDN.

If  you're set up for SNMP traps (we aren't) you can configure those.  What we do instead is use NAGIOS to monitor using IPMI and HP tools  -- ipmitool sdr, ipmitool sensor.  hpacucli is used to watch for disk errors, capacitor/battery issues, and the failure mode setting.

No need for SIM. With Insight remote support 7.0.8  you need to install and configure with contact data only, register the ILO 4 and thats it. No agents needed.

Hope this helps!

How then do I incorporate it into my monitoring system?
