ML350 g4 memory question

I have a new ml350. It came with (2) 512 MB dimms. I added (4) 1GB dimms. On post the machine shows 5GB of RAM. Once in windows 2003 sp1, when I right click on my computer it only shows 3.5GB of ram. What could be causing this discrepancy?

Re: ML350 g4 memory question

Lance,
Make sure you have last server BIOS.
Use /PAE switch in boot.ini
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283037/en-us
Note: you need windows 2003 enterprise edition to see all 5 Gb of RAM in the windows. With windows 2003 standard edition you will see only 4 Gb of RAM.

Re: ML350 g4 memory question

Igor is correct. Set the switch in Windows.
Comment: You got to wonder why MS does these things AND makes it such a mystery, but it soes keep consultants in business

Re: ML350 g4 memory question

It is strange Lance because if you have installed sp1 for server 2003 then the /pae switch should be set automatically but again its microsoft :p so double check if you manually have to set it. It should resolve the problem but even then the RAM shown would be 4.5GB, why is that, can anyone tell

Re: ML350 g4 memory question

Hi Lance,

w.r.t this issue, the system ROM would need to be updated. Please refer the following link from hp and Microsoft:

Re: ML350 g4 memory question

I am running 2k3 standard.
For some reason I though it supported up to 8Gb of RAM.
Guess I am out of luck.

Re: ML350 g4 memory question

Lance,
just FYI:
windows 2003 standard x64 edition support up to 32 GB of RAM. The price is same as for windows 2003 standard 32-bit and I think your ML350 G4 support x64.
Of course you need to check if your applications can run on x64.

Re: ML350 g4 memory question

Just running 32 bit apps.
Next time I will get the higher capacity version of windows server.
