USB 2.0 PCI controller in a DL385 G1?

I need USB 2.0 available for a DL385 G1 server.  The server has 3 PCI-X slots  - 2 x 100MHz and 1 x 133MHz.  The 133Mhz slot has a Smart Array 642 controller installed in it with an external SDLT320 drive connected.

  1. I can not find any PCI-X USB 2.0 controllers which makes me think they dont exist.  Or do they?
  2. Can I plug a standard PCI 2.0 controller into one of the free PCI-X 100MHz slots?
  3. If I can use a standard PCI 2.0 controller, Will the 133MHz Smart Array P642 switch to 66MHz of the PCI 2 controller?

Thanks

Re: USB 2.0 PCI controller in a DL385 G1?

PCI-x is downwards compatible with PCI. There should be no problem to use a standard PCI card in that system.

The DL385 has two PCI buses, one with 2x 100MHz slots and one with 1x 133MHz slot. The 133MHz slot will not be affected by whatever you do on the 100MHz bus. (The slots are labelled on the backside)

The problem could be that the 100MHz bus will not switch to 66MHz... Normally buses capable of multiple speeds are labeled accordingly. (ie "100/66MHz"). The only way to be sure will be to look for a 100MHz card or to simply try it and see what happens.

Re: USB 2.0 PCI controller in a DL385 G1?

Thanks that answers my questions.  I purchased a PCI 2.2 card that I am going to try in one of the 100MHz slots.  If that doest work I will move the 642 to one of the 100MHz and then try the PCI 2.2 card in the 133MHz slot.

I'll report my findings.  Thanks

You can try that. But if the card does not work in a 100MHz bus, there is little chance that it works in the 133MHZ bus...

But you never know if these machines are capable of things not mentioned in the manuals :) You can't say it before you tried it.
