hp proliant ml150 g3 w/2003 Server OS

I have an opportunity to inherit this server for a very tiny non-profit and would like to install Windows SBS 2008 Standard with Exchange Server.  The server has 2GB of RAM, a 3 GHz Xeon dual core CPU, Intel 5000V Motherboard, and room for 6 Sata drives. Is there any reason that I shouldn't get this and put the SBS 2008 OS into it?

The HP ProLiant ML150 G3 serverтАЩs quickspecs show the following:

Processor support:

Intel┬о Quad-Core processors 1.60 GHz 1066,1.86 GHz 1066 FSB and 2.00 GHz 1333 FSB

Memory support: 8 GB maximum

Internal Drive Support:

  • ┬╖         Internal SAS storage capacity of up to 1.8TB (6 x 300GB SAS drives)
  • ┬╖         Internal SATA storage capacity of up to 4.5TB (6 x 750GB SATA drives)
  • ┬╖         Supports up to 6 SAS/SATA hard drives via HBA or RAID Controller

One gigabit Ethernet port, two USB ports.

The above seem to meet basic requirement for installing Windows SBS 2008. Refer to the following link:

                http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc527594.aspx

But the serverтАЩs QuickSpecs only list the following as supported operating system:

Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 (32 and 64 bit)

Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, Standard Edition (32 and 64 bit)

Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, Web Edition

Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, Enterprise Edition (32 and 64 bit)

Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

Netware 6.5

SCO OpenServer Legend 6.0

SCO Unixware 7.1.4

Red Hat Enterprise Linux

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server

It may be possible to install the operating system, but much cannot be said as to stable working as the drivers required may not be available for this operating system. You may give a try installing drivers for that of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for 64-bit Extended Systems at:

Re: hp proliant ml150 g3 w/2003 Server OS

Thanks for the reply.  I was hoping someone on the forum had acually installed SBS 2008 on this server.  I understand exactly what your saying and I will keep it under advisement.  Usually when I gamble on the untested, I get burned.  Thanks again for the advice.

Re: hp proliant ml150 g3 w/2003 Server OS

I don't see why it would be an issue.  I'm running Win 7 Ultimate x64 on my ml150 g3 and it works perfectly. SBS 2008 should have all your drivers already, even if it doesn't you can use the 64-bit drivers from 2003 server (the VGA one at least worked fine with win7 x64).

Hope this helps!

Re: hp proliant ml150 g3 w/2003 Server OS

Hi

I recently picked up a HP Proliant ML150 G3 from a dump for $5, in hopes to save the pc and upgrade it as a project.

I am having issues with trying to install Windows 7 as the bios does not support a USB boot. I have tried booting from a DVD with windows 7 on but with no luck as I don't know the buttons to press to boot into the DVD.

I know this is an older thread but it would be of much help if you could relp as I see had or still have a ML150 G3 with Windows 7 on it.

Thanks
