Trojan Horse Worked Against the Greeks, but it Cannot Work Against HP TippingPoint

MarthaAviles ‎02-27-2014 10:42 AM - edited ‎09-25-2015 08:30 AM

You know the story. The Greeks used a Trojan horse to enter Troy, hiding within it, and overtaking the city “hiding in plain sight”. Troy led its enemy inside, thinking the horse was a victory trophy, and instead it was their downfall.

This past week, HP TippingPoint DVLabs shipped a filter for Neverquest, a banking Trojan that disguises itself within financial sites, stealing credentials, downloading additional malware and propagating via social media, email, and other standard methods. Due to expanding popularity of this malware, TippingPoint has providing multiple signatures to protect NGIPS and NGFW customers against a similar fate as the city of Troy.

Per standard practice, DVLabs immediately augmented the HP TippingPoint ReputationDV feed with the publically observed command and control DNS/IP entries tied to Neverquest.  Only two days after shipping the Digital Vaccine, one of TippingPoint’s largest retail customers witnessed the filter firing and is currently analyzing infected machines from a targeted Neverquest attack.  The HP TippingPoint DVLabs team leveraged its team of security researchers to analyze the network traffic and report details of the attack to the customer.  Additional domain entries were added to RepDV from the infected host communication in order to bolster the RepDV feed.  Working together is how we stay ahead of the bad guys!

Whether you are running an HP TippingPoint IPS or NGFW, the TippingPoint IPS is always at work for you. In this specific case, security intelligence was used to validate the threat and protect the retailer from a devastating breach.  Don’t let your organization be a modern day Troy!
