WebInspect Tip: Proxy Switching With Firefox

Chris Sullo ‎11-20-2008 09:57 PM - edited ‎09-25-2015 09:05 AM

Just a quick tip that if run scans through multiple proxies, WebInspect 7.7 and a Firefox add-on can save you the hassle of  re-entering the proxy settings over and over.

The “Use Firefox proxy settings” can be found in the Proxy section on the settings window. This will grab whatever settings you have in Firefox and use them for your scans, just like the Internet Explorer one does.

Proxy Settings

Jeremy Gillick’s straight-forward and excellent SwitchProxy Firefox add-on will let you quickly switch between any number of predefined proxies, (including lists of anonymous proxies if that sort of thing suits your taste).

SwitchProxy’s prefs let you change proxies via the context menu, toolbar or status bar. For example, with a simple right-click on its status bar location, you can pick a different proxy, and WebInspect will pick that up from the settings for the next scan.

There are a host of other Firefox proxy add-ons available as well, including Foxy Proxy, Proxy Toolbar, MM3-ProxySwitch, and more… your choices may vary, but they should all achieve the same goal.

Internet Explorer users might try Swodum's Proxy Toolbar for MSIE (which has a free version), though I haven't tried it.

If you have the FireFox Web Developer Toolbar add-on then you can just go to the Disable button and check 'Disable Proxy'. I usually just leave the proxy settings in FF and use this method. SwitchProxy is nice too.
