SEA attack on President’s social media tools

SR-FI_Team ‎10-29-2013 07:18 PM - edited ‎10-29-2013 07:19 PM

The Syrian Electronic Army continued their western targeted attacks this week by attacking President Barack Obama’s campaign media. Once again, by targeting a third-party and insiders’ email, they were able to modify shortened urls to redirect visitors to their own website, as well as a YouTube video.

Using this tactic, they were able to affect the barackobama.com campaign website, Facebook account, and Twitter account. The SEA has targeted third parties successfully in the past and continues their campaign using previously proven tactics. Jason Lancaster, HP Security Research, stated that targets continue to escalate, because the larger the audience of a victim, the more they are able to spread their message.

Any high-profile western individual or organization should take special care to secure social media accounts and websites from these types of attacks. Additional care should be taken in utilizing two-factor authentication where possible, and to secure third-party applications that help manage social media.

For more on the SEA, read, “Understanding the Syrian Electronic Army.”
