Purdue University is a leading academic institution and a leader in IT technology innovation, with a large campus infrastructure for research and fastest campus supercomputer in the U.S.  The university is known not only for science, technology, engineering, and math programs, but also for its imagination, ingenuity, and innovation. Needless to say, IT plays a critical role in the support the university provides in supporting researchers. To aid in this assistance Purdue University deploys supercomputing clusters that were originally listed on the list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers in November 2011, and then again with a Linpack benchmark of 186.9 TeraFLOPS.

In November 2011, it added a new cluster named Carter developed as part of an early program with HP ProLiant Gen8 servers including 648 HP ProLiant SL230 Gen8 compute nodes with Intel Xeon E5-2600 processors, plus 6 HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 servers used as cluster front-end servers.  “Carter” is being used for cancer research, meteorology and aeronautical fluid dynamics.

While able to document the following improvements:

  • Benchmarked at 186.9 teraFLOPS
  • 80% cluster efficiency
  • Interconnect bandwidth over 6.3 GB/s between nodes

Mike Shuey, HPC Systems Manager for Purdue University advised that the system has already delivered up to 70% performance improvements over Purdue’s existing computers and “doubled the performance we can achieve using the same amount of power and the same amount of floor space as our previous clusters.”
