4 key elements to managing and securing applications across the application lifecycle in the cloud

How does security and application management change in the cloud? Managing the application lifecycle for the cloud requires some different approaches to ensure agility, scalability and security within private, public and hybrid cloud environments.

In the latest This Week in Cloud video, Rafal Los, Chief Security Evangelist at HP Software presented four key elements an organization needs to adopt across the service delivery lifecycle:

  1. Model-driven—separates the bits and the metadata, and empower automation
  2. Automation—streamlines how applications move through the development lifecycle from development to production environments and from private to public clouds with less opportunity to introduce human error
  3. Portability—ensures applications can move to those environments without having to do it over and over again
  4. Real-time performance and risk indicators—gives a deeper view into the application than you would have otherwise to identify risks and security issues

The Twitter chat on May 10 emphasized security and application mobility, and Rafal (@Wh1t3Rabbit) provided some further thoughts on the model-based approach:

A model-based approach to security is brilliant because it lets us ACTUALLY "abstract security in" 12-05-10 1:17 PM

A model-based approach is defining the abstract from actual implementation 12-05-10 1:20 PM

I think model-based approach helps when trying to do governance - rather than implementation-based security 12-05-10 1:22 PM

Automation translates that model into implementation - keeps humans from screwing up 12-05-10 1:26 PM

…automation also brings agility and speed (when running well) which is what we want 12-05-10 1:27 PM

(The next chat on Twitter is scheduled for Thursday, May 17 at 1 p.m. ET—just follow #convcloud.)

I’d like to hear from you: what steps are you taking to ensure that applications you develop will be secure and easy to manage in various cloud environments? What do you think of the model-driven approach?
