EVA 4400 and VMM 2012

Hi

I have some questions regarding the integration of EVA 4400 with Microsoft Virtual Machine Manager 2012 SP1.

A new Hyper-V host cluster has been set up with Windows 2012. What we want now is to set up virtual HBA, so VMs can get access to fibre channel hba for guest clustering.

Currently we manage the EVA using the 4400's integrated management module and the P6000 Control Panel. EVA / P6000 Command View is not installed on any server. The MM version is 0002.2000.

The server running SCVMM 2012 SP1 is fibre channel attached to the EVA, as our intention was to install Command View on it.

In order to integrate EVA with SCVMM 2012 SP1 as Storage fabric, we need an SMI-S 1.4 compliant storage provider. I understand installing P6000 Command View 10.x will give us this.

Here are my questions:

1. Is my understanding correct that we will need to install the Command View software on a server to get the SMI-S 1.4 provider software?

2. Can HP P6000 Command View be installed on a Windows Server 2012 running Virtual Machine Manager? This blog post warns against it, though I do not know why: http://www.hyper-v.nu/archives/hvredevoort/2011/03/vmm-2012-fabric-deep-storage-integration/

3. Can HP P6000 Command View be installed on a Hyper-V virtual machine (on Windows 2008 R2 or 2012)? I am considering running a locally stored VM on the VMM server, so that it is independent of the SAN and the host clusters.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

btw. I wasn't sure if SMB or Enterprise was the right forum, as I guess it could fit both.

Re: EVA 4400 and VMM 2012

I found this in the CV 10.2 release notes:

HP P6000 Command View array-based management:

...

Does not support HP SMI-S EVA and HP P6000 Performance Data Collector natively . However ,
both HP SMI-S EV A and HP P6000 P erformance Data Collector support EV As that are managed
by HP P6000 Command View array-based management . To do so, install the software on a
Windows server from the HP P6000 Command View installer . With the HP SMI-S EV A provider ,
be sure to give the IP address and credentials of the array running HP P6000 Command View
to the provider . See the HP P6000 Command View Installation Guide for instructions.

...

So you obviously can use the array management module with an external SMI-S component only.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Thank you Torsten for your answer!

That sounds like a much easier solution than what I had planned. :)

Re: EVA 4400 and VMM 2012

Just in case anyone is wondering:

Installing HP SMI-S EVA on the same server as SCVMM 2012 SP1 worked fine. I have now added the EVA 4400 as storage fabric in Virtual Machine Manager.

Re: EVA 4400 and VMM 2012

I know that this is almost a year old, but, I can't connect my management server to my VMM server to save my life.

HPA EVA4400

SCVMM 2012 R2 installed on Windows Server 2012 R2 (Hyper-V 2012 R2 guest)

HP Command View 10.3 installed on Server 2008 R2 with a fiber connection (Hyper-V 2008 R2 Host Machine)

Management software: mmp-0002.2000-NR0E0B

Version: 10.3.0.130618 on the management server

10.2.0.121109 on the management module

Went to Fiber channel fabrics, right clicked, add Storage Devices

I've tried the SAN and NAS devices and Fiber Channel fabric

Storage discovery of fabric provider (IP ADDRESS) for user (ADMIN USER) failed from (VMM MachineName)

Specify valid provider, port and user credentials for storage discovery.

Re: EVA 4400 and VMM 2012

Hi

You should add a firewall rule on EVA Management Server that allow TCP port 5989 for SCVMM to be connected to on EVA Management Server.
