brocade 2800 serial cable

I know that the console cable for a brocade 3800 is a db9 with only txd, rxd, and gnd (txd on one end connected to rxd on the other and vice versa).  What about the 2800? I put a db9 connector with a flat ribbon cable to a 10pin connector (matching pin to pin) on the console port in the 2800 and then the same cable I used in the 3800. And I am getting nothing. Am I missing an important step here?
