700/72 Terminal Console Login screen keeps refreshing

Hello
I have K570 that I use for a test box. I have a 700/92 terminal connected to it. I have the Console Login: screen, but as soon as I begin to type, a new Console Login: prompt pops up. Any ideas?
Thanks
Don

Shalom Don,

The thing belongs in a museum. We have several and I would say either its hooked up wrong or its had a hardwar failure.

You can hit control-d at start up and perhaps it will reset to factory defaults.

I suppose the cable or connecter in the K570 may also be flakey.

Re: 700/72 Terminal Console Login screen keeps refreshing

Hello Don ,
We still have couple in our "Museum" too . Have look at the terminal settings. use the SYS key in the middle of the function keys to get there. Are you in BLOCK mode ? if so turn that off
Has the emulation mode been changed to em52 or em100 instead of hp ?
Is the ctrl key stuck down ?

I am not near the machine room today if you need help with the exact setup I can go an look at one of ours tomorrow
Mike .
Help is out there always!!!!!

Hi Mike

It's in remote mode. The emulation mode is Hp. The ctrl key seems fine. When you have time to check one of yours, I'd appreciate it.

Re: 700/72 Terminal Console Login screen keeps refreshing

Hang onto those 700/92's (and other 700/9x series)...they are excellent terminals and don't require Windoze to start up...

It is likely someone has cat'ed a binary file to the terminal screen and buried in all the random data are some escape sequences that have change internal settings such as block mode, ENQ/ACK handshake, DC1/DC3 protocol, etc. The 700/9x terminal is not dumb so there are a lot of screens to look at to fix this kind of problem. Luckily, HP made it easy. Just turn off the terminal, hold down the 'd' key and keep it pressed while you turn on the terminal. Wait untill you see a reset message on the screen and all should be well now.

You'll find that HP menu programs like swinstall and sam and glance are infinitely easier to use with an HP terminal than using a laptop wit Hyperterminal.

Hi Bill

I've powered it off, & held down the "d" key, powered up, & still no luck. I do agree that these terminals do come in handy.

The other possibility is a baud rate mismatch. The default for the terminal is 9600. Check the stty for the console in inittab to see that it wasn't changed to 19200 or something much higher. Some admins think that 9600 is too slow and change it not realizing that it if the terminal is reset, nothing will seem to work. The console is one of those devices that just has to work all the time.
