Changing IP Address and hostname on HPUX 10.20, CDE Problem

Hello,

When I try to change the ip address using set parms or otherwise, after I reboot the CDE screen comes up black and white. I don't get the login screen. When I try to execute an interrupt CNTL Shift & break, it will show the background console, but then immediately shift back to the CDE screen.

I have tried changing the hostname and ip address using the /etc/hosts file and the /etc/rc.config.d/netconf file. Still the system will not provide the CDE login screen when I try to change the hostname or IP... any suggestions ?

Thanks

Greg

Re: Changing IP Address and hostname on HPUX 10.20, CDE Problem

hostname and IP addy are in the following file

/etc/rc.config.d/netconf

You can change them there.

Read the comments.

You can do temporary changes of the IP address with ifconfig

This is one of the few files you should not back up in the /etc/rc.config.d directory. Make and keep a backout copy in the root accounts home directory.

Hi,

Don't leave copies of backup files in /etc/rc.config directory.

I suggest after you've made your changes to any network configuration file, you may need to stop and start your CDE background processes.

# /sbin/init.d/dtlogin.rc stop
# /sbin/init.d/dtlogin.rc start

If this does not work, you may need to stop and restart your network services.

Re: Changing IP Address and hostname on HPUX 10.20, CDE Problem

Greg,

The problem could be with the hostname resolution.

Make sure that the hostname properly resolves with the ip and vice versa.
Are you using a DNS.
If you are using a local hosts file then after changing them then your CDE should work.
I assume that you are using DNS for the server.

Also make sure that you run
/usr/contrib/bin/X11/dr_dt
and check your /var/dt/Xerrors to check your CDE environ

Re: Changing IP Address and hostname on HPUX 10.20, CDE Problem

Hi,

perhaps this can be solved either by deleting files and directories in the $HOME with "curr*" (like .dt/session/current) or by removing the files in $HOME/.dt/palettes

Please try this.

Re: Changing IP Address and hostname on HPUX 10.20, CDE Problem

Hi,

I don't think the problem is related to the session of a user if not even a login screen appears.

The problem is probably related to hostname resolution. So check /etc/nsswitch.conf. It should check files first:

hosts: files [NOTFOUND=continue] dns

Then make sure that a correct entry for the new ip address exists in /etc/hosts.
Well, yeah ... I suppose there's no point in getting greedy, is there?

Re: Changing IP Address and hostname on HPUX 10.20, CDE Problem

To be more specific:

the value returned by the command

$ hostname

has to be resolvable. So check if
if the following two commands provide the same output:

$ nslookup `hostname`
$ nslookup
Well, yeah ... I suppose there's no point in getting greedy, is there?

Greg,

Has your DNS server been updated with this new IP address for this host?

also do you have anything in your Xaccess file?

these also have to resolve to valid DNS entries
