Error Log

we have an HP-c3700 which keeps on experiencing hang-up problem. Already re-installed the OS but problem still persist. Appreciate if someone can give me some inputs on how to view error report on HP and how to perform HP diagnostics on this machine.

THanks in advance.

Re: Error Log

Hi Bven,

There is no well defined rule for troubleshooting. If you have any extra devices connected to this workstation pls remove all. Start the machine with a minimum configuration, and observe for somtime.

Hanging problem could be due to some hardware issue.

see following:-

/var/adm/syslog/syslog.log

# dmesg ( see and make sure that there is no SCSI resets )

Another way is to use STM ( Support Tools Manager).Install the same if it is not installed already. Since you have a CDE, you can use xstm, which is a diag utility.
Do tests on memory modules, IO as well as HDDs.

Again you can install EMS on your machine and get problem events notification and have a snap shot of the problems.

If you can post your syslog and dmesg, will be helpful in finding the prob.

Re: Error Log

You should check following log:
#vi /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log
#vi /var/adm/syslog/OLDsyslog.log
Check H/W log
#cstm
cstm>sall
cstm>il
IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILY WITH CSTM. YOU SHOULD USE xstm (in X client)
#dmesg
Check GSP log

Re: Error Log

Hi,

Also make sure you have no corrupt memory modules like ECC errors in the dmesg output.

Re: Error Log

Have you had any reboots of the box at all or just hangs ?

Check /etc/shutdownlog to see if there are any lines that have a "panic" message in there.

Check the timestamp INSIDE of the file /var/tombstones/ts99 to see if an HPMC has been logged.

Also, with a hang up, you can do a "TC" (transfer of control) of the machine and have HP look at the crash dump to see what is causing the problem.

For this type of box, there is a recessed TOC button located to the right of the LAN AUI port on the rear of the box.

WHILE the machine is hung, use a pen to push this recessed button. This will write a crash dump and reboot the box.

Then you can contact HP and they can troubleshoot the crash dump.

Best regards,

Oz

Re: Error Log

Look at /var/adm/syslog/OLDsyslog.lg
Look at /var/adm/OLDmessages.

If you have accounting files. you might look at what was running at the time.

go to /var/tombstones. look at the ts?? file dates, if they correspond with your outage. send a copy to HP support.
