HBA not detecting in O/S

HI,

I have just installed HBA card in BL860c.

On ILO it is showing Fine, able to find the hardware

QLogic QMH2462 4Gb FC HBA for HP c-Class BladeSystem

but in O/S (HP-UX 11.3) it is showing below error.

0/3/0/0/0/0: Fibre channel Driver Read bad NVRAM Header

Additional status is 0x03
status == 0x01: Bad/Incorrect Signature
status == 0x02: Incorrect minimum version
status == 0x03: Incorrect Checksum

init of hardware not successful. id=10772432 and my_isc=d

What could be the problem Guys as the same problem is coming in 4 Servers in which we have installed 4 new HBA cards.

Re: HBA not detecting in O/S

Do you have the HP-UX FibrChanl-01 (fcd) software installed?   Check with # swlist Fibr*

If installed, check the version.  Update to the latest if needed:

https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=FibrChanl-01

Also, check the BL860c server firmware (use the # machinfo command).  The latest is v. 4.31:

Re: HBA not detecting in O/S

Hi

Below is the swlist O/P

swlist | grep -i Fibr
  FibrChanl-00                          B.11.31.0803   FibreChannel;HW=A6795A,A5158A
  FibrChanl-01                          B.11.31.0803   FibrChnl;HW=A6826A,A9782A,A9784A,AB378A/B,AB379A/B,AB465A,AD193A,AD194A,AD300A
  FibrChanl-02                          B.11.31.0803   PCIe FibreChannel;HW=AD299A,AD355A,AD221A,AD222A,AD393A

Machinfo O/P

Firmware info:
   Firmware revision:  04.21
   FP SWA driver revision: 1.18
IPMI is supported on this system.
   BMC firmware revision: 5.36

In another BL860c Same firmware is there and HBA is detecting.

Re: HBA not detecting in O/S

I would check the HBA firmware and EFI driver:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=3709945&prodSeriesId=1844104&prodNameId=1844105&swEnvOID=54&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=co-102984-1

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HBA not detecting in O/S

During the Server Booting it is given a error

"fibre channel adapter nvram error binding aborted"

I had tried to Update the Firmware using batch fcd_update4.nsh utility in efi shell. It shows that it is updating but after reset it agains shows same error.

Below are the Error Screen Shot

Re: HBA not detecting in O/S

With firmware reporting as "0.00" at the EFI shell and the firmware update process not working, this is looking very much like a defective card.

But Question is that When i reboot the server All the firmware got lost.

When i tried to save in NVRAM it is asking me for the NVRAM file name

efiutil> nvram_write
 Nvram data filename?
Please specify the nvram file name
This operation is not supported with default file name

How could i find the nvram filename.

Re: HBA not detecting in O/S

Perhaps an issue with the firmware files themselves?  Try downloading and applying firmware from a previous version to see if that changes anything.

Re: HBA not detecting in O/S

Or if possible can we write/save the changes in NVRAM as i don;t know what could be the NVRAM file name and his location.

Re: HBA not detecting in O/S

Well, I have never done udpates like this outside of the script provided.  I did note that within the firmware package there is an efiutil.pdf document that describes the nvram_write command among others.  I also noted a 'diagnostic' command that may be useful.

I would just advise caution.  If your card's NVRAM is corrupt, then I guess there isnt much to lose.  If, for some reason, the problem is elsewhere, you can certainly cause more problems by writing the wrong data!
