HP-UX Ignite server

Hi,

I need to set up an HP-UX Ignite server to boot HP Integrity Blades.

Can an HP9000 act as an Ignite server for HP Integrity servers?

Thanks
Andrew

Re: HP-UX Ignite server

Hi Andy,

Yes, to be more specific
http://www.docs.hp.com/en/5991-7999/ch02s01.html

Hardware Requirements
An Ignite-UX server supporting boot, installation and recovery for clients requires the following hardware:

Computer: An HP 9000 (PA-RISC) system running HP-UX 11.0, HP-UX 11i v1, HP-UX 11i v2, or HP-UX 11i v3; or an Itanium├В┬о-based system running HP-UX 11i v2 or HP-UX 11i v3 is required

Re: HP-UX Ignite server

Sure Andy, it's not a problem. You just need to know if you plan to have an Integrity Ignite Client, that there should be only one Ignite Server per subnet, otherwise your integrity client will be pretty annoyed, because when you are booting the client to restore it over the network, you enter in EFI shell> lanboot , and there has to be only one ignite server responding to the boot requests and no other DHCP/bootp servers.

Re: HP-UX Ignite server

i think your question is specifically using pa-risc server as the ignite server for integrity server?

http://www.docs.hp.com/en/5991-7999/ch02s05.html

you have to define whether to use pa-risc or integrity server as your ignite server. if both are not using the same version of hp-ux, i would say the answer is no.

Re: HP-UX Ignite server

A full install of ignite/ux can support all other supported versions of the OS.
An server based on HP-UX 11.11 can install clients with 11.23 or 11.31 for example.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: HP-UX Ignite server

you are right, torsten.

Support for Multiple Architectures
==================================
Ignite-UX supports both the Precision Architecture Reduced Instruction Set Computing (PA-RISC) and the Intel├В┬оItanium├В┬о (Itanium├В┬о-based) hardware architectures.

Re: HP-UX Ignite server

both ignite server and client can be different OS versions. It won't be a problem if you installed your ignite server with all related OS bundles.

Go to

http://h20293.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=IGNITEUXB

and choose what OS versions would you like your IUX Server to be able to support.

Re: HP-UX Ignite server

Thank you all for your great response.

With regard to Wittie's comment "there has to be only one ignite server responding to the boot requests and no other DHCP/bootp servers", does this mean that the Ignite server cannot co-exist with other Windows BOOTP/DHCP servers like RDP and Windows RIS (Remote Installation Server) on the same subnet?

Re: HP-UX Ignite server

yes, I think these windows dhcp/bootp servers might be of a problem. The itanium client will send a broadcast to the subnet and the first server which responds to the boot request will be taken. You better test this first before you turn your systems into production ...
