Another possible cause is slow hostname resolution.

 

If /etc/nsswitch.conf does host resolution files first, having an entry for the local ip address in /etc/hosts can significantly increase speed of login.

 

/etc/hosts

 

...

 

ip address    hostname hostname.fdqn
