Re: Login Problem

So it's throwing you out without even asking for a password? Looks suspiciously as though /etc/passwd has gone missing.

How recently have you logged in? If it was recent, what's changed? Do you have an ignite backup?

Re: Login Problem

OUCH!

Do you know of anyone currently logged in? If so try to get to a shell prompt and su up to root. Can you login as another user?

If not, then a hard reboot is necessary and then go into single user mode and fix the problem-> corrupted /etc/passwd file, /etc/securetty is wrong, account is disabled, ...

Re: Login Problem

Looks like, there is a problem with /etc/passwd file. Can you login as normal user?? Check /etc/passwd file and it's perms.

If nothing works, boot into single user mode and check passwd file.

Re: Login Problem

Hi All,

Thanks for prompt reply.
1)Even I am not able to login as normal user.
2)Have hard booted the machine but it doesn't work.
3) Now have booted machine thru CDROM & able to mount the /root.
4) I have already tried coping /etc/passwd file of cdrom but it does not work.
5) By chroot I am able to mount my original / partion & changed the root password with command passwd root . But this also does not worked.
6) Note : I am not able to locate the /etc/securetty file. It's not there in /etc.

Please let me know what could be the problem.

Re: Login Problem

can you check size / date on /usr/bin/login ?
if it's corrupted, you can copy it from another system.

Re: Login Problem

Not having an /etc/securetty is a good thing (for now).

Did you recently make this machine a trusted machine??

What changes have you made to this machine recently??

Do you have an ignite backup (make_tape_recovery or make_net_recovery) of this system?

has login of root ever worked? For how long?

Re: Login Problem

Walter,

Check the permissions of the /usr and / directories.

# ls -lad /usr
dr-xr-xr-x 24 bin bin 1024 Jun 23 2004 /usr
# ls -lad /
drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 1024 Mar 24 14:34 /
