Printing with CUPS on redhat Linux AS 4

I am running RedHat Linux AS4 on a HP Proliant DL585 server.

I have LPD/LPR within CUPS printing and created a print queue to print through the LPD/LPR procedure to a network printer HP laserjet 5500HDN printer connected to a Windows server.

While I was created the print queue I chose RAW as the print type for the above HP5500HDN printer.

I can print test page in colour and I can print postscript files but if the postscript file is PS-Adobe-1.0 then nothing is printed.
However, I can print postscript files which are PS-Adobe-2.0 and PS-Adobe-3.0 successfully.

The second problem I have is if I print a simple ASCII file then each line is printed like a step effect. See below:-

This is line
this is line two
this is line

In order to create and manage printer
I used firefox browser to connect to the ESP Web interface and connected to port 631.

Any help would be useful.

I am not sure about the PS issue. I would expect it is more to do with the printerâ s software than RH.

However, your problem with the text file is your selection of RAW. You are telling the spooler not to preprocess the file. Unlike MS-DOS text files in UNIX/Linux do not include a carriage return at the end of the file. They always print out that way unless you specify a preprocessor.

I usually use the GUI tool in Linux to setup the CUPS printer interface and specify the appropriate HP LJ driver. That normally gives correct printing of PS, PCL, and text.

I'd consider another option in setup.

This may be an application problem, I agree with the first poster on that.
