Problem loading 11.31 OS on 11.23 VM guest via ignite ?

Hello All,

I have a rx6600 11.23 VM server. I created a guest ( hovm230 ) with (1) disk (c2t0d1)assigned. When I utilized ignite to load 11.23 OS, it scans the i/o and finds the disk,
and loads the 11.23 OS just fine,

but when I select the 11.31 OS via ignite, it is unable to locate the disk ? What am I doing wrong?. Do I have to define the local DVD , and load 11.31 onto the "vm guest" via the DVD ?

Re: Problem loading 11.31 OS on 11.23 VM guest via ignite ?

This is the same virtual machine, right?

What HPVM version are you using? Version 2 does not support 11.31 guests.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Problem loading 11.31 OS on 11.23 VM guest via ignite ?

Look again at your VM.

Am I missing something. It shows 1 lan;8G mem;4 CPU. But 0 for disk.

Did you add disk to your VM to accomodate loading an O/S?

I'm new to this VM world, but once I added more disk to my VM and retried to install the O/S it had enough and took off fine using the DVD loading 11.31 EOE guest (Host server 11.23 iA64)

Just a thought,
Rgrds,

Re: Problem loading 11.31 OS on 11.23 VM guest via ignite ?

Where is your disk?

Is it compatible with 11.31?

Example EMC CX without current firmware doesn't support 11.31.

The only issue we had with igniting vm's was that lan isn't a boot option by default...so you have to add it manually...

Re: Problem loading 11.31 OS on 11.23 VM guest via ignite ?

Hello All,

I'm going to attempt to configure the DVD for VM-guest ( hovm230 ), and see if I can load the 11.31 OS from CD. If this works, it points to Ignite. Keep you posted.

Re: Problem loading 11.31 OS on 11.23 VM guest via ignite ?

Tip for DVD's:

Create ISO images of hpux install media if needed:

Disk 1:
dd if=/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0 of=/var/opt/hpvm/ISO-images/hpux/HPUX11iv3Sep07-OE-Ent-D1.iso bs=64k

Disk 2 (after removing disk 1 and mounting disk2):

dd if=/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0 of=/var/opt/hpvm/ISO-images/hpux/HPUX11iv3Sep07-OE-Ent-D2.iso bs=64k

Add User-specified directory of ISO images:

hpvmmodify -P pcvm0105 -F -a dvd:scsi::file:/var/opt/hpvm/ISO-images/hpux/HPUX11i-OE-Ent-D1.iso

Add local storage:

hpvmmodify -P pcvm0105 -F -a disk:scsi::lv:/dev/vgpcvm0105/rlvdisk1

Go to the console:

hpvmconsole -P pcvm0105 -fi

Go to "Boot option maintenance menu"

Do a "Cold Reset"

Let system boot - it should find the install media.

When it prompts for disk 2, on the vm host:

hpvmmodify -P pcvm0105 -m dvd:scsi:0,1,1:file:/var/opt/hpvm/ISO-images/hpux/HPUX11i-OE-Ent-D2.iso

NOTE: To get the Hardware address (0,1,1) run a hpvmstatus -P VMGUESTNAME -d

# hpvmstatus -P pcvm0104 -d
[Virtual Machine Devices]

[Storage Interface Details]
disk:scsi:0,1,0:lv:/dev/vgpcvm0104/rlvdisk1
disk:scsi:0,1,1:lv:/dev/vgpcvm0104/rlvdisk2
dvd:scsi:0,1,2:file:/var/opt/hpvm/ISO-images/hpux/HPUX11iv3Sep07-OE-Ent-D1.iso
