I have an HP machine which we are not using. It has OS 11.11.
Since i am new to HP, i want to try re-installing the OS on this machine. My comapny has allowed me to do so, provided i give them a machine thats well set up. Once i have reinstalled the OS they will start using this machine as a development machine.
My questions is how to reinstall the OS if i have all the OS cds?
I need the machine to have the same ip address and all other configurations as it is having now, so what are the files i need to keep a copy of?
Also What all info will the installation process ask me for that i need to keep ready at hand.
all inputs appreciated.

Re: Reinstalling OS
/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/nsswitch.conf
All for networking.
I'd put them to tape so you can restore it.
ftp'ing to another box wont work because your network will be down until you get the correct ip address...

Solutionfiles:
1) /etc/rc.config.d/netconf (for IP address / router
address).
2) /etc/resolv.conf (for name server address)
I can only think of these two files. See if someone
suggests something I can't recall right now.
The installation process will ask you IP address and
router info only. Unless you are sure what you are
doing, take the default values for filesystem sizes
and everything else.

Re: Reinstalling OS
Before you start loading make a note of
the filesytsem layout(if you want to keep it same)
Network parameters
/etc/hosts
/etc/nsswitch.conf
/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/rc.config.d/netconf
#swlist -l bundle (to know what products are there on the system)
The above files can be copied over to another server.
Network parameters and filesystem layout would be required for the install and also the primary swap space(run swapinfo -at)

Re: Reinstalling OS
Thankyou for your reply,
Was i installing a new machine, where would i get all this info from?
i basically want to install this machine as if i was installing a new machine and get it up and running.
I will defiantely take a backup on tape of all the files i have currently in there, just for the rainy day.
But assuming i was installing a new machine, waht all do i need to take care of? what info do i need ready at hand?

You need just the IP address, hostname and gateway
(router) address. Nothing else. These parameters
should be in the files I (and others) mentioned in last
few posts. Just write down these values on a piece of
paper and enter when the installation process asks
you.

Re: Reinstalling OS
interrupt the boos sequence when it tells you you can.
type 'sea' to search for bootable devices
type 'bo' and the P number associated with the device and it will boot from cd.

Re: Reinstalling OS
When system is booting interrupt the boot process. On PDC menu, do se ipl. It should show the cdrom/dvd rom device.
Then do bo p1 (assuming that p1 is boot device-cdrom/dvd)
From then on it is self explainatory.

Re: Reinstalling OS
there is a .codeword hidden file in /var/adm/sw/.codewords
you can make an ignite image of the machine and save it to a remote, trusted disk if you have it
make_sys_image is the command (do a man on it)
