SAM Slow when accessing users in HP-UX 11.31

When I run SAM to add a user, it flasehes working for 5-8 minutes before it displays the
user list. The other areas work fine.

I recently migrated the passwd file from an old system so I don't know if this is causing an issue. Users have no problem logging in and once the list displays I can add but that screen takes minutes to appear as well.

A couple questions.

How many entries in your /etc/passwd file ?
If thousands then SAM will take awhile.

Are the current entries valid ?
run pwck

Don't use SAM.
useradd, usermod and userdel all work great.

Re: SAM Slow when accessing users in HP-UX 11.31

We have 944 entries in passwd

The pwck returns four errors that state the "Login directory not found"

Could this be causing the delay?

Well firstly, SAM does not exist for 11.31, it is SMH (System Management Homepage), which gives you the options of a web based gui, or a TUI.
I doubt that migrating a password file from one server to th eother would cause an issue, but it would be worth checking how big the password file is, and also whether you have all the correct home directoires, permissions, groups etc.

Should the home directories have rights of 666 or 777?

Hi Joe:

They should be 755

You never want 777 permissions! Using 755 means each owner has full rights and others can at least search, read and execute (but not write).
