diagmond child processes for 11.23 on Itanium

We recently implemented a series of new Itanium servers running HPUX 11.23. On our old PA Risc 11.11 servers our monitoring software would watch for the 'memlogd' process (and also cclogd, psmctd, and diaglogd); these were all child processes of diagmond.

Now when we start diagmond (by running the rc script /sbin/init.d/diagnostic) the only child processes we get are 'diaglogd' and 'psmctd'. Is this normal? Have the other child processes been eliminated?

Our release of the Support Tools is:

OnlineDiag B.11.23.09.05 HPUX 11.23 Support Tools Bundle, June 2007

A strings command against /var/stm/data/daemon_list shows this:

diaglogd
STM diaglogd platform_mod A.02.00 1 A.03.00 hp-ux"
psmctd
STM psmctd platform_mod A.01.00 1 A.01.00 hp-ux"x"

But I don't know if that means these are the only daemons available or the only ones that are installed.

Re: diagmond child processes for 11.23 on Itanium

Hi,
Yes, the daemons on IA systems are different from the PA systems because of differences in the hardware, and the way information is obtained from it. For example, on PA there is a separate memlogd and dm_memory monitor; on IA the functions of the two are provided by the memory_ia64 monitor. On IA the functions of cclogd are provided by ia64_corehw.

What's the reason for monitoring the daemons, by the way? What action do you take if you find any are missing, and how often does this occur?

Andrew

Andrew - Thanks for the info; that's what I needed to know.

We use Netcool/Patrol to monitor for a variety of system and application processes that should always be running (and sometimes fail). It doesn't happen very often for system processes (but it does happen occasionally) and this monitoring process is what notifies us so we can restart the process.
