disk allocation

Need an expert opinion. I am trying to get ready to install the Bundle11i and QPK for June 2007 on hpux 11.23 Pa risc server. However, I believe that I do not have enough disk space currently to accomplish this, here is a bdf:

kbshpdev/home/xfr0139->bdf
Filesystem kbytes used avail %used Mounted on
/dev/vg00/lvol3 409600 195152 212824 48% /
/dev/vg00/lvol1 295024 90856 174664 34% /stand
/dev/vg00/lvol8 8806400 1079376 7667736 12% /var
/dev/vg00/lvol7 2605056 1717600 880544 66% /usr
/dev/vg00/lvol4 1228800 650504 574808 53% /tmp
/dev/vgdev/lvsldb 3072000 691262 2232116 24% /sldb
/dev/vgdev/lvprod 2048000 1322649 680750 66% /production
/dev/vgdev/lvp4root

/dev/vgdev/lvoracle
5636096 4167073 1387317 75% /oracle
/dev/vg00/lvol6 3178496 2214936 956288 70% /opt
/dev/vg00/lvol5 7168000 3841888 3301336 54% /home

/dev/vg00/lvaudit 409600 28695 357105 7% /audit
/dev/vgdev/lvapps 2564096 478593 1955464 20% /apps

Currently I have approximately 7GB still available in the vg00 volume group. If I add this to either /var or /tmp should this give me enough room to do the patching?

Also, on this server I do NOT have online JFS so I would have to do all the disk maint in single user mode, correct?

I was looking at three options, first just allocating the unused space as I mentioned about.

Second using lvreduce on the /var lvol, but after doing some research on the forums I have discovered this is NOT a good thought!

Third, was to rebuild the box from scratch and reallocating the disk space.

Please let me know your thoughts

thanks...Jay

Re: disk allocation

If you start the swinstall process, it will check the space.
Do this first at least until the analyze phase and you will see the results.

You probably have enough space yet.

Hope this helps!

Re: disk allocation

I'm with Torsten. I think you have enough space but the install will tell you before it actually starts installing.

Re: disk allocation

To my eye, you appear to have adequate room to install the bundles as it is. However, why ask a bunch of guys you don't know when you can ask the box itself? Run swinstall and the analysis phase will tell you if you have enough disk space. I'm certain you will have no problems if you are installing from CD but if you have downloaded the bundle and need room for the patches plus the install depots then I would do this:

Rather than adding your free 7GiB in vg00 to an existing LVOL, I would add a brand-new LVOL and make a filesystem and use it to store the bundles. After swinstall is finished, you can blow the new filesystem and LVOL away and keep your free space.

You should also bet a baseball bat and whack yourself because no HP-UX box should be without OnlineJFS.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: disk allocation

Jay,
It looks like you have sufficient space to install the QPK on this server. You can always check by doing a "preview" install which will just run the analysis of the install including the disk space analysis. This is done by adding a -p if performing from command line, or cancel the install after analysis is complete in the GUI/TUI mode.
If you need to reduce /var, you can "commit" superceeded patches using the cleanup command. This removes the superceded patch "save" files in /var/adm/sw.

Hope this helps.

Re: disk allocation

Shalom,

When you attempt to install a patch set with swinstall and it fails, there is a failure message.

It includes the swjob command.

In this output is the specific reason the install failed, including filesystem issues.

I can tell you this: With 7 GB free on /var you don't need to add any space there to get the install done.

/tmp and /opt also look fine. So does root /

So I recommend:
Ignite make_tape_recovery or make_net_recovery backup.

Installation of patches without further system modifications.

If I've missed something, please point it out.

Re: disk allocation

Hi Jay:

My thinking is the same as Clay's. In fact, I'd go one step further.

Fetch and install the new SWA (Software Assistant) product. It's simple to configure. It allows you to perform a patch analysis and then download the bundles you need. Your '/var' space is quite adequate for the SWA cache, and the addition of another non-vg00 filesystem (or additional vg00 logical voulme) for SWA depot creation would obviate the need to enlarge any of the vg00 filesystems.

By the way, you SHOULD have OnlineJFS not only for its dynamic filesystem resizing options but the additional performance-enhancing mount options and backup snapshot ability.

Fetch SWA here:

Re: disk allocation

thanks all for your help...

Clay..I am thinking about switching to metal bats, the wooden ones keep breaking...

Re: disk allocation

No way; stick with the wooden bats. I really hate the tink of aluminum bats whilst I am performing developer/vendor adjustment.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
