fbackup errpr with DDS2

I am trying to do a fbackup of afilesystem with DD2 tape drive( python DDS2)
but it gives me an error as follows
The interesting thing is tar and cpio works perfectly with the same tape and tape drive
only fbackup gives error
fbackup syntax is okie and I tried backup from within SAM as well.I tried different DDS2 tapes.

session began on Mon jan 3
writing volume to output file /dev/rmt/c2t4d0BEST
write error on an FSM in the ANSII label
write error at beginning of volume
enter ctrlY ctrl E ctrl O... when volume is ready on /dev/rmt/c2t4d0BEST

Re: fbackup errpr with DDS2

Take a tar backup on tape. and ten fbackup on it. also you may try doing a mediainit on the tape and try fbackup afterwards.

Re: fbackup errpr with DDS2

DO you mean i should have tar write to end of tape and then rewind it and fbackup?
I will try mediainit too and will let you know

any clue why fbackup would behave this way.
my hp-ux 11 i is sepetmber 2003 release.but not patched later on

thanks

Re: fbackup errpr with DDS2

Wy I am telling about tar backup is, it will write the the tape and fbackup will overwrite it. midaiinit will also help.

Hi Martin,

Maybe this link would help,

http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/cki/docDisplay.do?docLocale=en_US&docId=200000062955454

The itrc doc id is W3627058.

Re: fbackup errpr with DDS2

further to Sanjay's answer

thanks that looks like the issue.
but my drive is DDS2 and not DLT.
So for DDS what would be the device specifications to be used in mksf

and the driver used is I believe is "stape2 "

Re: fbackup errpr with DDS2

I tried the steps in the tech doc
but with the custom device created with mksf, even tar doesnt work.it gives device not found error.
the only device file which seems to work is density "BEST"

infact the drive is DDS1-archive python A28454

I tried to make device with mksf with density DDS1 but that wont work either

any furhter clue?

Re: fbackup errpr with DDS2

What does ioscan -Ctape -fn
give you and what is the contents of your /dev/rmt directory?

Re: fbackup errpr with DDS2

Hi,

I think we are having a hardware / OS compatibility issue over here. Do not think this hardware would work.

Hope this helps.

Re: fbackup errpr with DDS2

I will get you the ioscan entry tomorrow as I dont have access to server rightnow .have the rmt entry written down so here it is .

/dev/rmt has c2t4d0BEST 205(major) 0x024000 ( minor)

205 belongs to stape driver

ibelieve hardware is configured okie.issue is fbackup interfacing with stape driver.
tar and cpio and pax runs fine.
i tried with several DDS1 60m tape catridges

thanks for your time
